Résumé de la conférence
Safe streets are more than a lack of collisions. It is understanding where the hazard – the potential to kill or severely injury – exists. This presentation will first introduce the concept of traffic hazard and why this approach will help address traffic danger systematically. Then, it will explain how we developed a means of estimating traffic hazard that can be applied across the entire road network. It will close with an example of the application of this new knowledge to identify where to address traffic danger for children going to school.

Owen Waygood
Owen Waygood is Professor of Sustainable Transport at Polytechnique Montréal. He is the lead editor and a key contributing author to the book, Transport and Child Wellbeing. Through his research on children’s active and independent travel, he realized the need for a tool to measure traffic hazard. He is happy to have found a great team to achieve that goal.
Shabnam Abdollahi
Shabnam Abdollahi is a researcher at Polytechnique Montréal specializing in traffic safety, transport analysis, and urban design. She completed her PhD under the supervision of Professors Owen Waygood, Marie-Soleil Cloutier, and Irène Abi-Zeid on the development of the Traffic Hazard Tool, which helps cities identify and prioritize high-risk areas for road users. With over a decade of experience on projects promoting pedestrian- and child-friendly streets, she works with municipalities such as Montréal and Westmount to guide safety interventions and improve accessibility for all.
